Discovery Ed: March Resources

Tomorrow is March. You know the saying... In like a lion, out like a lamb! Of course for us it has been more like experiencing every season in a week. Either way, there is a lot going on in March, especially in Discovery Education. 


To start, Read Across America Day is on Thursday, March 2nd. Did you know DE has a channel that is a collection of storybooks brought to life through animation and voice? In partnership with Vooks, this collection of stories is great way to have students hear someone else read a favorite book, or to access text that might not be available in your school library. See the collection here. 

Consider choosing "Sweet People Are Everywhere", written by Alice Walker. After students listen to the story, they can use the studio board questions for discussion. Or perhaps share this video, which features the author reading the book and being interviewed along with the illustrator, Quim Torres, who discusses his process in Spanish!

March is also Women's History Month, the perfect time to highlight extraordinary women throughout history in DE's Women in History Channel. Teacher's can also use the Choice Boards with students which provide content along with a customized activity. These boards are available for elementary and middle school levels. 

Finally, spring is actually officially coming on Monday, March 20th. The seasonal change channel should have you covered with videos, songs, and writing prompts with information on weather, ecology, hours of daylight, etc. Consider pairing with the Grades K-2 Grammar Fix It activity board, or for everyone the Grades 3-5 March Activity Calendar. For older students, check out the Instructional Activities page for inspiration and ready-made materials. 



I also have to remind you about some things you won't want to miss:

  • Educators/students in Grades 5-8, don't miss the 3M Young Scientist Lab + Young Scientist Challenge - registration is open through April 27th.

  • National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week is March 20-26th – Explore no-cost prevention programs like Dose of Knowledge that helps educate students on making good decisions and Operation Prevention that help kickstart life-saving conversations for educators, students, and families.

  • And last but not least, this is an interesting one! Cooperative Minds dives into how the co-op business model connects communities. The Cooperative Minds Career Profiles provide a look into the many roles of agriculture!

Computational Thinking: Its really not that scary!

Who to Follow on Social Media

This allows us to get information from one place and in the small snippets of time- and it doesn’t fill up our inboxes!
