There are so many reasons us teachers collect student work samples. One of the main reasons, an essential part of the teaching and learning process, is to show growth and share that growth with all stakeholders.

For most of my career these samples were collected at the beginning, middle and end of the year and stored in file folders. Then, at conference times, the student work was shared with parents to show where the student began and where the student is now.

Brightspace can help streamline the collection and sharing of the samples we share with parents while enhancing the way we analyze and share the growth our learners have made
.

Artifact Collection:


Brightspace Portfolio allows for the collection of key artifacts, including videos, audio recordings, and multimedia presentations. Hard copies of student work can also be scanned, uploaded and stored. This tool has many ways to enhance the collection of student artifacts. Artifacts and portfolios stay with students as long as they are enrolled in our district.


Artifact Sharing:

Parents have access to the portfolio widget in their Brightspace Parent & Guardian account. When an artifact is ready, teachers can easily share with parents. No more waiting until conference time or composing separate emails for each student. Parents can come into the meeting with questions and thoughts having already seen student work.

 

Artifact analysis:

Submitted artifacts can be scored against a rubric and aligned with standards. Parents and Guardians can see student scores and achievement when an artifact is shared from Portfolio.

Artifact Organization:

Teachers have options when it comes to organizing the Brightspace Portfolio. Class categories can be created to organize artifacts and can be used later to filter evidence for easy retrieval. Teachers can also add reflections for students and leave feedback.

Student involvement:

Depending on the setting you choose, students can have as much control over their portfolios as the teacher. Students can decide what artifact they want to add and what they say about that artifact. Students also have the option to spotlight their favorite artifacts.
