Have you ever used a Studio Board in Discovery Education? I hope so, because if not, you are missing out on one of the only customizable digital worksheet creators out there! Today, I am going to discuss two options for using this amazing tool right inside Brightspace. We all deserve to work smarter, not harder so let's get more from Brightspace with Discovery Education.

Embedding a Discovery Education Studio Boards Directly in Brightspace.

Studio Boards designed as a way for students to gather information from multiple sources are easily embedded into Brightspace and allow students to manipulate the board directly from Brightspace. Students do not have to leave Brightspace in order to access the board.
Studio Boards make great choice boards or can be used to house a content collection on a specific research topic. The example to the right was used in a 6th grade science classroom. Students used this Studio Board to explore the different organisms in the Chesapeake Bay. Students used that information to create a poster. The posters were used to investigate the role those organisms play in a food web. This activity put teacher selected information in students hands and eliminated the need for cumbersome packets.

Studio Boards can make a graded assignments more engaging and accessible to students. Combining multiple choice and short answer responses can lessen your grading load substantially. Multiple choice or multiple select will grade themselves, while short response allows for teacher review and hand scoring.

Put the Studio Board directly into a Brightspace assignment by using the insert "Quicklink" tool. This allows for a due date to be added and the work completion to be tracked within Brightspace. When selecting the Submission and Completion options,  select: "External Tool Submission" under Submission Type and "Manually by Learners" under Marked as Completed.

Student View: Discovery Education Studio boards and Assignments Inside Brightspace

The student views vary depending on the attachment method.
  • Embedding a Studio Board makes the board viewable right from Brightspace. Student can click and interact with the board without leaving the content area.
  • Using a quicklink will require the student to click on the quicklink to access the assignment. The student will be navigated directly to Discovery Education to work. The benefit of using this method for graded work is how it appears for students in terms of showing up on their "Work to Do" widget, Brightspace Calendar and and under the Assignment icon on the NavBar. Keeping all of a students graded work within Brightspace Assignments means your student can easily keep track of any work they need to complete. Students will need to manually mark the assignment as complete after clicking the "Turn in Assignment" button in Discovery Education.
